Help and Support
At Whitchurch Primary School, we know that children and families may sometimes need additional help. If you are worried about your child’s learning, development, emotional wellbeing, behaviour or mental health, please contact our SENDCo or Headteacher. We will listen to your concerns, work with you to understand what your child may need and help you identify the most appropriate support.
You do not need to wait until a problem becomes significant before speaking to us.
Mental Health Support Team in Schools (MHST)
We are fortunate to have access to the Mental Health Support Team in Schools (MHST), an NHS-commissioned service providing free, early mental health support for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate difficulties such as anxiety, low mood and emotional dysregulation.
Support may include one-to-one sessions with an Education Mental Health Practitioner, group work, parent-led support and whole-school approaches to emotional wellbeing. The team primarily uses low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LI-CBT), which is a brief, structured and goal-focused approach.
MHST is not appropriate for every need. Where difficulties are more complex, primarily related to neurodiversity, significantly influenced by wider circumstances, or require specialist mental health intervention, we will work with families to consider other appropriate sources of support.
How Do I Access MHST Support?
Parents and carers can contact school if they feel their child may benefit from MHST support. Children may also speak to a trusted member of staff, and school staff may identify pupils who could benefit from additional support. Concerns are discussed with the school's Designated Mental Health Lead (DMHL), who can make a referral to the MHST where appropriate.
Further Support for Families
Families may also find the following services helpful:
Coram Family Lives provides information, advice and support for parents and families on a wide range of issues, including family life, relationships, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

Please talk to us if you are concerned. Asking for help early can make a real difference, and we want our children and families to feel supported.
