Physical Education

An engaging, progressive and challenging approach to Physical Education that develops the whole-child with fundamental skills of movement and a life-long ambition to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

At Whitchurch Primary School we believe in a unique, child centred approach that engages and challenges the whole child. Through using the blend of Real PE and sports coaching; we challenge children within six key areas of development: Physical, Personal, Social, Health and Fitness, Cognitive and Creativity.  We develop success across the Physical Education Curriculum as well as in life, using the skills taught and nurtured in our PE lessons.

^^^Click the link above to see our overview, which highlights which fundamental skills and sports the pupils at Whitchurch Primary School experience each year.

We teach using a whole-school wide approach and ensure progression of skills throughout a child’s time at Whitchurch Primary School. We aim for every child to feel supported and challenged within each lesson, as well as enjoyment! Due to our skill based school wide approach, our children are taught through skills and skill based games to ensure everyone feels included, supported and challenged. As they become more confident, children develop a growing self-awareness and a commitment to self-improvement, so they can make informed decisions that lead to happy and healthy lives.

Children enjoy swimming lessons within a term, where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively. Here at WPS, we consistently have high numbers of children who can swim 25m; our average Year 6 results are around 80%! Children also have the amazing opportunity to attend a term of sessions at a local Gymnasium, where they are taught a range of gymnastic skills; flexibility, core strength, balance, upper and lower-body strength, focus, discipline, and dedication.

We also enjoy 'A Week of Adventure' to celebrate new sports and the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle - both physically and mentally! Watch our video of the last year's week below!

Pupils at Whitchurch Primary School also have an amazing opportunity to pursue a love of the outdoors! Not only do we have an impressive playground that fosters exploration and fitness through play - climbing walls, swings, pick up sticks, trampolines and fitness centred playground markings. Children at our school also have 4 weeks of forest school every year. This is facilitated through our forest school area, which includes a veg garden, pond, woodland area and a natural story circle. Children progress through forest school from planting and growing in EYFS to detailed compass and map skills in Year 6, and makes links to each year group's curriculum throughout. Due to our love of forest school here at WPS, we run horticultural therapy sessions for children in small groups with our forest school leader and have been awarded silver gilt in the latest Bath in Bloom competition!

We also ensure that safety when outdoors is pivotal, so each year we have sessions on Bikeability for upper Key Stage 2 and road safety for all!

Our school works in partnership with providers and school staff to provide a wide variety of clubs. We have seen success with our sports teams at Whitchurch Primary School, including competing in interschool football. We are currently reigning champions of the F1 Motor Championship, as well as reigning local swimming competition champions! Our inspiring and engaging PE curriculum has continued to propel two Whitchurch Primary School alumni to become national gymnastic champions.

Whitchurch Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
