International Education Policy

 "Achieving our best together"

INTRODUCTION

At Whitchurch Primary School we have always promoted and valued an international dimension in the school curriculum and for the wider experience of our pupils.  We wish to prepare our pupils so that, with confidence in themselves and respect for others they can live and work in a changing world.

RATIONALE

The school has a vital role in preparing pupils for global citizenship.  This is especially relevant for Whitchurch Primary School, as we are predominately an all white school with no children of ethnic minority.  The promotion of the international dimension in all aspects of the curriculum will assist in removing barriers between cultures, encourage openness and positive communication between individuals and groups.

  • To develop an awareness and understanding of children’s position as active citizens within Europe and in the wider world.

  • To develop knowledge and understanding of the historical, geographical, political and economic circumstances which have led to the diversity of the International civilisations.

  • To enable children to counter cultural bias in all forms by encouraging them to develop informed views and opinions.

  • To appreciate different languages and cultures.

  • To become tolerant and understanding, courteous, curious and assured in the company of people from other cultural backgrounds.

OBJECTIVES

  • To identify opportunities for developing the international dimension throughout the curriculum.

  • To fully integrate the international dimension throughout the curriculum.

  • To make contact with children in other countries through class links, visits and working with visitors from other countries in the classroom.

  • To provide experiences using a variety of media, which facilitate understanding of current developments, including magazines, newspapers, videos, Internet etc.

  • To provide opportunities for all staff to participate in international educational visits.

  • To identify a member of staff with responsibility for co-ordinating and supporting the work of staff in developing the international dimension.
